In the morning all the children arrived on the Green for a photo and were then given a bag containing an orange, an apple and some sweets and were loaded onto “sharra bangs” (coaches as we know them today) and were taken for a ride to the country.  Meanwhile, our mothers and fathers had arranged tables of sandwiches and drinks.  Beer had been brought up from the Beeches Pub on wheelbarrows and a neighbour’s piano was brought out.

On arriving back all the children changed into fancy dress and went to the green for more photos.  They were presented with a money box in the shape of a crown in Red and Gold.  Then the street party began with songs round the Piano.

And I remember travelling up to Birmingham for The Queen’s Coronation, as my Gran Hadley had a Television. We dressed in our best dresses to watch the Coronation on TV, and had a family party in the garden in the afternoon.

For the Queen’s Coronation there was a fancy dress competition and party (I think) held in Tinkers Farm School Hall.  Mom made my fancy dress (A Coronation Pierrette) out of crape paper and I won first prize.

  1. We celebrated the coronation at Tinkers Farm School. MY mom made costumes for my sister and I out of crepe paper and we helped. My sister was a queen and I was a fairy. I remember cutting out the crowns from the bread wrappers so that they could be stuck on to the crepe paper. I remember we were given a bag of sweets and an apple and orange and thought this was absolutely great – what a treat. I was about 4 and my sister about 8 years old.

  2. Coronation Day, I am led to belive the piano mentioned may have belonged to my grandmother and it was placed on the green in Porlock Crescent.

  3. I was at Trescott Road school and we had to draw a big Buckingham Palace and all the Beefeater and Soldiers and cut them out and place them round the model of the Palace. I remember the joy of it all as we were doing it, it all made it so real. We celebrated the Coronation at Tinkers Farm School where we had a big party and a silver coin each. Happy Days!

  4. i remember the coronation…my brother john organised a committee to have a party for the children in cheverton…they would meet every sunday morning in mrs chadwicks garden shed to work out how to raise money and what activites the children could do…i would make and take a big pot of tea up to them .they payed me 1d per cup …i felf like a millionaire on sundays

  5. We lived in Elmdale Crescent and had a massive street party to celebrate the Silver Jubilee. My dad was chairman of the committee and I remember him wearing a red blazer and union jack hat and cutting the ribbon at the end of the rd by Hoggs Lane to officially announce it closed for the day. We had a massive fancy dress party (I came 2nd as the queen!) and was very jealous of my neighbour for coming first, dressed up as a daisy!!! The party went on all night, finishing with a big disco and “Miss Elmdale” party – where my dad and two of his friends dressed up and entered!!!!!!! I remember my younger brother driving up and down the road in his plastic police car with his friend, they kept stopping by food and filing the boot up and then hiding under the table and eating it all!!!!!! At the time we were at Bellfield school – I missed all the celebrations because I was having my tonsils out but my brother has a picture of himself dressed up as a pearly king with a very tall solider that came into school for the occassion!

  6. We celebrated Coronation Day with a sports day on the green space by the island in Norrington Road/Masonleys Road. I remember winning the 3-legged race with Jim Maher. We watched the coronation on our 12inch tv which had a massively thick magnifying glass in front of the screen. It also rained all day!
